Types of Counterfeit Components
Not every counterfeit part is a completely new fabrication. The most common categories are:
- Relabelled components: Lower-grade or weaker variants are marked with a higher-grade designation – for example, an industrial-grade part declared as an automotive version.
- Recycled components: Parts salvaged from used equipment are cleaned, re-marked, and sold as new. Remaining service life and residual capacity are unknown.
- Empty or defective components: The package looks correct, but the die is blank, damaged, or simply absent.
- Cloned components: Complete imitations manufactured without the original manufacturer's licence – often with deviating internal structures.
When the Risk Is Particularly High
Counterfeit risks increase significantly under certain market conditions:
- EOL components: Discontinued parts are no longer supplied by the manufacturer. The market fills the gap – and not always with reputable sources. See the section on obsolete and EOL components.
- Allocation and shortage phases: When authorised distributors have no stock, buyers turn to grey-market sources – where counterfeit rates are significantly higher.
- Unknown or unvetted suppliers: Brokers without documented quality standards, unverified online marketplaces, anonymous trader offers.
- Unusually low prices: An offer well below market price is a reliable warning sign.
Identification Criteria: What Purchasing and QA Can Check
A structured incoming goods inspection is the most important protective measure. The following methods have proven effective:
Visual Inspection
- Markings under a loupe: blurred print edges, deviating typeface, missing or incorrect manufacturer logos
- Package surface: sanding marks (indicating recycling), deviating colour or texture compared to reference parts
- Date code and lot number: check plausibility – does this code exist for the specified manufacturer?
- Packaging and labels: original tape-and-reel, correct manufacturer labels, consistent markings
Advanced Inspection Methods
- X-ray analysis: Examination of internal structure for empty packages, incorrect bond wires, or deviating die geometry
- Decapsulation analysis: Opening the package to examine the silicon die – complex, but sometimes indispensable for safety-critical parts
- Electrical functional test: Measuring actual electrical parameters against the datasheet specification
