What Is Obsolescence Management?
Obsolescence management encompasses all measures a company takes to ensure component availability across the entire product lifecycle – from design through to discontinuation and beyond. It includes monitoring, risk assessment, and planning concrete response strategies as soon as a component enters its end-of-life (EOL) phase.

1. Last Time Buy / Stockpiling
Before the official end-of-life date, a final order quantity (Last Time Buy, LTB) is built up to cover projected demand until the next redesign or product end-of-life. This strategy is fast to execute but requires a reliable demand forecast and ties up capital and warehouse space. A miscalculation – too little or too much – can be expensive. 2. Qualified Alternative / Substitution
A form-, fit-, and function-compatible replacement (drop-in or near-drop-in) takes over from the discontinued part, ideally without any changes to the PCB or housing. 3. Redesign
When there is a fundamental technology change or a long product horizon, it may be worthwhile to redesign the affected board or module.
