End-of-Life (EOL) for Electronic Components: What a Discontinuation Really Means
A "Product Discontinuation Notice" in your inbox or distributor portal may initially sound like a distant problem. But end-of-life (EOL) on a key component can – without swift action – halt production lines, jeopardise delivery commitments, and force costly emergency procurement.
Definition: What Does End-of-Life Mean for Electronic Components?
End-of-life describes the state in which a manufacturer permanently ceases production of a component. From a specified date, no new units are manufactured. Existing stock held by the manufacturer and in distribution then represents the last units available through official channels.
The terms discontinuation and obsolescence are often used interchangeably, but they technically describe different states: a discontinuation is an event (the manufacturer announces the EOL), while obsolescence describes the permanent state of unavailability.
Why Do Manufacturers Discontinue Components?
The reasons are varied and are usually economically understandable from the manufacturer's perspective:
- Declining demand: When volumes become too low, production is no longer commercially viable.
- Technology shift: A new generation (e.g. a 28 nm instead of a 40 nm process) makes the predecessor economically unattractive.
- Production changeover: Wafer fabs and packaging lines are retooled for new products.
- Raw material and supply chain issues: Certain materials or production processes are no longer economically available.
- Regulatory requirements: Hazardous substance regulations (e.g. RoHS updates) can make older product variants unviable.
For the component customer, the reason is ultimately secondary – what matters is how much time remains until the last ship date.
The Phases of a Discontinuation: NRND, LTB, EOL
Manufacturers typically pass through several stages before a component is finally unavailable:
- NRND – Not Recommended for New Designs: The component is no longer recommended for new designs. Still available, but a warning signal for engineering teams. No immediate action required for existing products.
- LTB – Last Time Buy: The manufacturer opens a final order window (typically 3–12 months). After this date, no new orders are accepted. If you do not place a last-time buy now, you are dependent on the secondary market.
- LTS – Last Time Ship: The last date by which already-ordered units will be delivered. After this, the direct manufacturer channel is closed.
- EOL – End of Life: The component is officially discontinued. Sourcing is only possible from stock held by distributors, brokers, or the secondary market.

Impact on Ongoing Production
Depending on the component and how deeply it is embedded, the effects can be significant:
- Production stoppage if no replacement is sourced or qualified in time
- Cost increases through emergency sourcing on the secondary market at premium prices
- Demanding redesigns under time pressure, including re-certification (e.g. CE, IATF 16949, DO-178)
- Delivery delays to your own customers and the risk of contractual penalties
First Steps When You Receive an EOL Notice
- Identify the affected component across all active bills of materials and spare parts lists.
- Calculate remaining demand until the next product end-of-life or redesign.
- Record the Last Time Buy date and Last Time Ship date and communicate them internally.
- Research available alternatives and secondary market stock.
- Decide between strategies (stockpiling, substitution, redesign).
